The main objective of the project is to reduce the exposure of the population to road traffic noise through proper planning and optimisation of road maintenance operations. Currently, the condition of the pavement is assessed by visual inspection of the entire network, which is very time-consuming and requires a lot of human and financial resources. The aim of the project is therefore to develop an automatic asphalt deterioration detection system that will allow comprehensive and frequent monitoring of the network. The system is based on measuring the sound level inside a tyre, surveying the pavement with a video camera and using AI methods to analyse the acoustic and visual data collected. The system will be installed on a dedicated vehicle, which will be able to characterise the condition of the road as it drives over it by processing the data collected. The results will then be geo-referenced. In this way, it will be possible to identify specific indicators that will allow the prioritisation of interventions.
