Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an invaluable functional imaging modality. In Time-of-Flight (TOF) PET systems, pushing the timing performance of the detectors towards the 10 ps goal would allow the development of TOF PET with improved signal-to-noise ratio images able to diagnose smaller size tumors (few mm) and reduce the radioactive doses injected to the patients.
UPSTART intend to advance research in the field of fast timing detectors by exploiting optoelectronic properties of metal-halide perovskites (MHP) films starting from both colloidal chemistry route and laser ablation technique.
UPSTART proposes the development of ultrafast heterostructured scintillator combining standard LYSO crystals and MHPs. Synergic combination between the absorption and scintillation mechanisms of the two materials will be investigated to enhance the radioluminescence (RL) emission, thus compensating for the low energy deposition in the MHP layer due to the nanometric size or relatively small thickness, and lead to the development of an efficient and fast scintillator for TOF-PET.
