Gli studi in vivo infatti offrono un approccio importante per la ricerca traslazionale, tuttavia hanno diverse limitazioni. Pertanto, le piattaforme in vitro possono costituire una valida strategia alternativa: non solo determinano una riduzione dei costi e sono preferibili dal punto di vista etico, ma possono potenzialmente essere personalizzate per ogni specifico paziente. Le piattaforme in vitro possono rendere possibile combinare le caratteristiche di sistemi-modello sperimentali con le propriet\u00e0 biologiche di organi e tessuti, permettendo cos\u00ec di replicare in vitro la complessit\u00e0 della fisiologia umana. Attualmente, questa tecnologia non \u00e8 ancora pienamente sfruttata nella rigenerazione neurale, e non vi sono metodi per produrre modelli di MS rilevanti dal punto di vista fisiologico. La complessit\u00e0 della struttura del MS nei mammiferi e la sua composizione eterogenea rappresentano un ostacolo per lo sviluppo di modelli di MS in vitro in grado di rappresentare le caratteristiche fondamentali dell'ambiente in vivo.
