Attività di Ricerca 

• Set up of flexible and versatile synthetic strategies that, taking advanced of colloidal chemistry routes, allow to obtain a wide range of nanoparticles and nanocrystals (TiO2, ZnO, CdS, CdSe, ZnSe, Au, Fe2O3 heterostructures like CdSe@ZnS, Au@SiO2 PbS, PbS@SiO2 and PbS@CdS core-shell and TiO2Fe2O3 and TiO2/Ag, TiO2, /Au coupled systems) with a good control on size, shape (spheres, rods, polypods, asymmetric heterostructures) and crystalline phase.
• Functionalization of colloidal nanocrystals and nanoparticles by carefully tailoring their surface chemistry of the nano-objects, in order to make them compatible with a variety of physical and chemical environment, and thus promptly processable, just like macromolecules
• Bioconconjugation of functionalized nanocrystals with model biomolecules towards biological applications, including labelling, bioimaging and theragnostics
• Organization of nanocrystals and nanoparticles in 2/3 D structures by assembly, either spontaneous or directed, micro-contact printing, layer-by-layer, standard deposition techniques (spin coating, casting)
• Fabrication of microscopic structures based on nanoparticles and nanocrystals conveniently assembled to achieve novel collective properties and specific functions, different from those that can be obtained by single nano-objects
• Preparation and characterization of nanocomposites based on organic polymer and semiconductor nanocrystals and/or metal nanoparticles, their deposition as thin film
• Nanocrystal based nanocomposites for micro and nanomachining, by means of both conventional and emerging top down lithographic techniques, such as UV microstructuring, Nano Imprint Lithography, Ink-Jet Printing, for fabrication of MEMS devices (AFM tip and cantilever, sensing cantilever)
• Modified electrodes formed by nanocrystal based films and sensitizer, such as phtalocyanins: photoelectrochemical investigation toward energy conversion and sensing
• Test of the optelectronic properties of the prepared materials in optical sensing elements
• Photodegradation of organic compounds in aqueous and organic environment assisted by oxide nanocrystals and nanocomposites
• Synthesis of metal/oxide nanocrystal nanocomposite and their application in red-ox processes as bifunctional photocatalysts and charge storage experiments
• Hybrid heterojunctions based on an organic moiety (conducting conjugated polymers or ionic liquid) and semiconducting inorganic nanocrystals for energy conversion
• Investigation and control of the spectroscopic (absorption and emission) properties of semiconductor nanocrystals in quantum regime (quantum dots) and plasmonic features of metal nanoparticles for their integration in functional materials and structures
• Nanoparticles and nanocrystals in nanostructured materials for plasmonic applications and towards fabrication of metamaterial by using colloidal chemistry routes
• Nanomaterials and nanocomposites for degradation of environmental pollutants.

Lucia Curri has been co-authoring over 180 papers, including more than 150 ISI paper, more than 140 articles on international peer-reviewed journals (JCR) and a number of other publications (8 book chapters, several conference proceedings, etc.) and has contributing to many conferences, also with invited talks (>20) and holds 1 patent.
She has several national and international collaborations.


Coordinating the material chemistry activities at CNR IPCF Bari, that aim at designing, fabricating and processing “soft” tools for development of synthetic strategies for preparation of colloidal nanocrystal based materials (metal, semiconductors and oxides), in order to tailor their physical and chemical properties towards photocatalytic, optoelectronic, environmental, (bio)sensing and biomedical applications. Her activities address functionalization of the nanoparticles with diverse surface chemistry modification procedures in order to organize the prepared nano-objects in mesoscopical structures to integrate in innovative functional materials and devices. She has a significant background in design and preparation of nanocomposites, based of nanocrystals and nanoparticles, for different kinds of applications, ranging from energy conversion, sensing, photonics and micro- and nano-fabrication.” nanostructured materials to be properly engineered for the achieving new emerging functions.
Her main expertise are in:
– Synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles and nanocrystals, also in quantum confinement regime, in a wide range of compositions, with a high control on size, shape and crystalline phase to fine-tune their chemical-physical properties
– Engineering of the nanoparticle surface in order to properly adjust their surface chemistry and obtain functional building blocks
– Characterization of the colloidal nanoparticles and nanocrystals with spectroscopical UV-vis-NIR absorption, luminescence, FTIR, XPS), structural (Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction) and morphological (AFM) techniques
– Genuine combination of top-down and bottom up strategies to organizing the prepared nanosized building blocks in structures (films, 2/3 D assemblies, polymer based nanocomposites, hybrid electrodes) that are thus able to bridge the scale from nano- to mesoscopic domains and achieve functional materials with tailored properties.
– Investigation of the original size- and shape-dependent (photo)catalytic and opto-electronic properties of the newly fabricated nanostructured materials carried out to assess their technological potential for their use in environmental technologies (water treatments and sensing applications), biomedical applications and their integration in systems and devices (MEMS sensors).
