Research activity: synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite materials based on colloidal semiconducting NCs and i) metal nanoparticles, ii) carbon nanotubes and iii) graphene and of hybrids made of graphene or carbon nanotubes functionalized with biomolecules for (photo)electrochemical detection of cancer biomarkers.

Attività di Ricerca
Synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles NPs and nanocrystals (NCs), namely Au NPs, TiO2 NCs spherical and elongated in shape, CdS NCs, CdSe NCs, CdSe@ZnS NCs-core shell, PbS NCs, ZnO NCs, Fe2O3 NCs, TiO2/Fe2O3 NCs, also in quantum confinement regime, with control on size shape and crystalline phase.
Synthesis of hybrid materials based on graphene and colloidal NPs/NCs, namely G/Au NPS, G/TiO2 NCs, G/PbS NCs for sensors, optoelectronic devices and (photo)catalytic systems.
Characterization of colloidal NPs/NCs with UV-vis-NIR absorption, luminescence and FTIR spectroscopy, structural (transmission microscope, X-ray powder diffraction) and morphological (AFM, SEM) techniques;
Functionalization of NC/NP surface by organic surface chemistry exchange procedures for the modification of their surface chemistry for incorporation in polymers, immobilization on surfaces, functionalization of carbon based nanostructured materials (carbon nanotubes and graphene) and conjugation to biomolecules;
Non covalent functionalizion of large area monolayer graphene films, grown by chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) with colloidal NCs for integration in photodectors, optical imaging and information communication systems.
Preparation and characterization of hybrid materials based on carbon nanotubes and graphene with biomolecules for sensing applications.
Preparation and characterization of super-hydrophobic and photocatalytic coatings based on organic-inorganic photostructurable polymer formulations and surface functionalized colloidal TiO2 NCs.
Preparation and characterization of assemblies of organic-coated NPs organized by chemical interactions on selected domains of di-block copolymers.
Preparation and characterization of nanocomposites based on colloidal luminescent NCs (CdSe also coated by a shell of NC ZnS) and semiconducting oxide NCs (TiO2) for their homogeneous incorporation in ionic liquids or polymeric ionic liquids for photovoltaic applications.
Preparation of NC based nanocomposites based on colloidal NCs and structurable polymers for fabricating microcomponents by means of either conventional and emerging lithography techniques, such as UV-photolithography, ink-jet printing and nanoimprint lithography for fabricating AFM probes, actuators, luminescent permanent microcomponents for light sensing and emitting applications.
Immobilization of colloidal oxide NCs on microcantilever sensors made of a photostrurable polymer to integrate in electronic noses for detecting organic vapour compounds.
Preparation and characterization of both layer-by-layer and bulk hybrid heterojunctions based on thin films of semiconducting conjugated polymers and semiconducting oxide colloidal NCs and their photoelectrochemical characterization for energy conversion applications.
Photoelectrochemical investigation of layer-by-layer hybrid heterojunctions based on colloidal semiconducting oxide NCs and metal phtalocyanine sensitizers.
AFM characterization of nanostructured films fabricated by plasma processes, proteins and DNA filaments.
